Understanding Your Child's School Fees

Utah law (Utah Code §53G-7-504) allows public schools, including charter schools like IEA, to charge limited fees for certain school activities — but it also puts strong protections in place for families. Here's what that means for you:

  • No student is ever denied participation in a school activity because a family can't pay. Fee waivers are available to any family who requests one, and requests are kept confidential.
  • Required fees (like the annual Apparel Fee) are subject to the fee waiver process — if you need a waiver, simply contact the Executive Director.
  • Optional fees — things like yearbooks, after-school programs, athletics, and travel — are never required to participate in your child's core education. After-school extracurricular program fees are optional and are not subject to the fee waiver process.
  • Field trip fees cover only transportation and entry/admission for optional off-campus experiences. Students who don't attend take part in a meaningful in-school alternative activity — no one is left out of learning.
  • Donations are always voluntary. A student will never be excluded from an activity or program for not donating.
  • Families are responsible for the cost of any lost, broken, or damaged school property (like a Chromebook or library book); this cost is not subject to fee waivers.

Every fee listed below is the maximum amount that may be charged. This schedule is reviewed and adopted annually by the IEA Board of Directors. For fee waiver requests or questions, contact your school administrator or Heidi Long, Executive Director, at hlong@igniteutah.org.
